Keys to Victory for Colerain

  • OFFENSE: The Cardinals should get their main offensive weapon back this week in Ivan “Taz” Pace Jr. The Lakota East defense is susceptible to big plays but will not let Colerain get yards easily up the middle.  It is going to another workman like effort against this squad as they are led by former Colerain Offensive Coordinator Rick Haynes who is as no-nonsense as they come.  He will have the defense ready to key on Pace, or whoever is a fullback, to force Colerain to make decisions at the mesh point between the QB and FB which, at times, has been an adventure this year.  Players like JJ Davis, Deante Smith-Moore and Syncere Jones could be a breakout star in a slot receiver/wingback position.
  • DEFENSE: The Cardinal Defense is the best in the GMC, only allowing 8.5 pts/game. They are playing at a very high level.  This week, they will face the leagues number one rushing offense and one of the most dynamic runners in the league in East Jr. Jack Dobrozsi, who leads all GMC rushers with 922 yards and 18 TD, along with a ridiculous 6.2 AVG!  He’s only been held under 100 yards once all year (vs. Fairfield 10-66, 1 TD) and hasn’t rushed for less than 113 in any contest.  He also boasts two, 200+ yard games on the year.  To say he is the focus this week is a vast understatement.

Bottom-Line

Colerain is 2nd in the GMC, behind Fairfield, in rushing defense.  Lakota East is 1st in the GMC in rushing offense…see where this is going?  Coach Haynes has a workhorse back in Dobrozsi.  He leads the GMC in Attempts, Yards, Yards per game and TD.  He is going to be a 1st team All-GMC player and a candidate for GMC Player of the Year.  Then again, so will Cardinal LB Dan Bolden who will be sure and introduce himself over, and over, and over again to Mr. Dobrozsi.  It is going to be a battle all night long that will be worth the price of admission.  Due to the offensive nature of both teams, possessions will be at a premium.  The Cardinals must maximize their time with the ball on offense as it’s likely to be limited.

Ultimately, Colerain will win this game because they are more talented and diverse on offense than Lakota East.  Conversely, they will lose this game if the defense can’t get off the field on 3rd downs allowing long drives that end in points.  They also can’t turn the ball over creating short fields for the Thunderhawks in which to score.  Bank on the former as the Cards move to 5-2 on the year and remain undefeated in the GMC.

Next Game:  Colerain travels to Fairfield next week to battle the Indians in what could be the de facto GMC Championship
